2009 SAFLA Conference “Cooperation at All Levels: State, District 2, School Districts and Communities!” SAU — Reynolds Center — Magnolia, Arkansas Saturday, November 7 — 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

09:00 — 10:00 Coordinating our Efforts for SW Arkansas Students and Teachers, Susan Grier, AFLTA Vice-President for Professional Development Cooperating to serve the interests of all in the Foreign Language community. New leadership in AFLTA District 2, collaborating with SAFLA to serve more teachers and students, as well as establish stronger ties with their learning communities.
10:00 — 11:00 The Foreign Language Festival and the ACTFL Community Standard: Motivating Students to Use Their Skills Beyond the Classroom Walls, Della Davis (El Dorado JHS & HS) and Shannon Risinger (Ashdown HS) Providing outlets, such as the Festival, language/culture related field trips and other community activities, to motivate students to use their acquired language skills beyond the confines to their classroom/school.
11:00 — 12:00 Providing High Quanlity FL specific Professional Development Opportunities, Michel Hallot (El Dorado School District) Bridging the gap between school districts and foreign language professional associations. Most foreign language teachers do not receive FL PD in their district. However, administrators are often willing to fund them seeking such PD, offered by various organizations in our area: AFLTA, SAFLA, and SCSC. Also, content update on of the summer workshop by Helena Curtain on Curriculum Design and Alignment (detailed H. Curtain handout on Thematic Unit Planning, with examples of units designed by SAFLA teachers)

01:00 — 03:00 Keynote: Collaboration Technology (Continued from Spring Workshop) Refresher for new and rusty users and more. Who wouldn’t be glad to access their often used files and documents from all of their computers, without having to copy them onto a key drive, ending up with several versions of the same document in different places, etc? Live Mesh, a free, very simple to install and use web-based service now allows you to do just that. Guarantee: this will be a great time saver for all teachers!
03:00 — 04:00 Leadership Workshop, Christie Tucker (Hope HS) and Chris Becnel (El Dorado HS) The importance of teacher involvement in a professional language professional organization at the local level. Discussion of current issues in our state/area, including legislation impacting our profession.
