South Central Service Cooperative — 2010 Summer Workshop
Bonnie Adair-Hauck, Ph.D. — University of Pittsburgh PACE: Story-Based Strategies for Actualizing the Standards hosted by the El Dorado School District August 11, 2010 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the El Dorado SD Central Office in El Dorado (200 W. Oak St.)
Each year, SCS C provides a foreign language workshop with a top-notch national presenter, such as Greg Duncan, Peggy Boyles, Eileen Glissan and Helena Curtain in the past few years.
Bonnie Adair-Hauck came highly recommended by Eileen Glissan, co-author of the Teacher's Handbook and key-note speaker at the 2010 AFLTA conference in Hot Springs, last April.
She will provide a practical look at chapter 7 of the Teacher's Handbook, a widely used Methods textbook. Bonnie Adair-Hauck & 2 colleagues conducted the original field research in "Using a Story-Based Approach to Teach Grammar". Mid-way between the traditional, grammar-based teaching of grammar and instruction in which is not taught and assumed to be learned implicitly by students, this novel approach gives grammar a reasonable role in language acquisition.
Rather that being taught, grammar rules are inferred by students from their use in the context of authentic language. Then, they are stated in the students' own words, instead of linguistic terms. Grammar is also practiced in context, not in discrete drills (e.g. filling the blanks, etc.). In this approach, grammar is a means to an end rather than the beginning, middle, and end of language instruction. It builds on existing communicative abilities to achieve accuracy over time, orally and in writing. This contextualized, problem solving/critical thinking approach to learning grammar is student-centered, as well as standards/frameworks-based. It is highly effective and, once one adopts it, one never looks back!
