SOUTHWEST ARKANSAS FOREIGN LANGUAGE ALLIANCE

Dear Colleagues: *****PLEASE NOTE NEW CHANGES******

SAFLA is sponsoring its sixteenth annual Foreign Language Festival. It is scheduled for February 28, 2009 from 8:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The Festival will be held on the campus of Southern Arkansas University at Magnolia.

The registration must be postmarked by January 18. Each teacher must have one (1) chaperone for every ten (10) students. Chaperones should be instructed to supervise while you are not around.

The entry fee will be $5.00 per student. REGISTRATION POSTMARKED AFTER JANUARY 27 OR ON-SITE REGISTRATION WILL BE $7.00 PER STUDENT. (Please note: Students who send posters and cooking entries must pay the entry fee, even if the student is not attending.  No fee is charged for essay entries.)

In order for their students to compete, teachers must be members of both SAFLA and AFLTA.

SAFLA dues are $10; AFLTA dues are $20 (for the fiscal year: July 1-May 30).

If you paid your dues to come to the fall conference, you do not need to pay them again (yearly dues for both organizations are required to participate in any and/or all SAFLA events, including the Spring In-service Workshop).

Send dues and/or entry fee

payable to:       SAFLA, Attn: Michel Hallot, 200 West Oak, El Dorado, AR 71730

Lunch for students will be available at the SAU campus cafeteria. The students will have a wide variety of foods available, including hamburgers, pizza, chicken, fish, and salad. The lunch price is approximately $5.50 per person. A snack bar with fast food is also available in the student center above the cafeteria.

Competition  in the following events is available to Spanish and French learners only: POETRY, EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEAKING, EXTEMPORANEOUS READING, VOCABULARY BEE, CULTURE TEST AND CULTURE BOWL, POSTER COMPETITION, COOKING COMPETITION, DRAMA and MUSIC. Because of scheduling constraints, each student is limited to participating in no more than three (3) events.

On the day of the Festival, each participant, teacher, judge, and chaperone will receive a map of the campus and a time schedule with event locations inside their packets.

The teachers in SAFLA recognize the excitement in achievement of foreign language learning. We hope this will be a fun and positive experience for your students. If you have any questions, e-mail Della Davis at festival1@safla2.org, Shannon Risinger at festival2@safla2.org, or call Michel Hallot at 870-864-5069 (email: president@safla2.org).  We hope to see you there!

***A SPECIAL NOTE TO TEACHERS ON BLOCK SCHEDULES***

We hope you will encourage your students to come and participate in the Festival, even if they will not be enrolled in a foreign language class during the Spring semester. Help keep their new language skills alive!   Because of the early second semester date of the festival, those students should compete at the level most recently completed.
